A flat tire is never a welcome sight, and getting one while driving can be downright dangerous. Luckily, our Toyota service experts at Bell Road Toyota have some tips for you to make sure you’re prepared.
Stay Safe
While it might seem like the normal reaction, don’t step on the brakes when you notice you've gotten a flat. Continue steering straight and slowly take your foot off the accelerator. Make sure to turn on your hazard lights as well.
When possible, slowly guide your vehicle towards the right lane and completely off the road, if possible. Stay in your vehicle until it is safe to exit.
Get Prepared
Before changing your tire, make sure you have everything you need. Check to see that your parking brake is applied; if it is, gather your jack, lug wrench, and spare tire.
Lay down a towel or blanket if the ground is muddy or messy. Then, remove your wheel cover if your lug nuts are covered.
Replace Your Tire
To replace your flat, start by loosening your lug nuts. Then, slowly jack your car up off the ground until your tire can fully rotate unobstructed.
After your tire is off the ground, unscrew your lug nuts completely and remove your tire. Put your spare tire on and reattach and tighten your lug nuts. Then, you can lower your vehicle completely and make sure your lug nuts are securely tightened.
Schedule Service
It’s important to schedule an appointment with our Toyota service center to get a replacement tire for your vehicle (you shouldn’t drive on a spare tire for more than 70 miles). We’ll get your tire replaced and check your remaining tires to make sure they're in good shape. You may even want to consider replacing your spare if it's worn down.
