Here at Bell Road Toyota, we know that automotive tech is
evolving rapidly. Newer Toyota models like the 2019
Toyota Camry offer advanced driver assistance technologies that practically
allow the vehicle to drive itself in some situations, so it's clear that
self-driving vehicles are coming sooner than some might expect. We're excited
to see them in action, but there are some things that autonomous vehicles need
before becoming viable. The Toyota brand believes that it has figured out one
of them.
What self-driving cars need is an accurate map. A human driver
might be able to adapt to a road that seems a little bit different than they
expected it to, but a machine has a harder time. The Toyota
Research Institute is working with partners to develop accurate,
high-definition maps for roads.
Basically, data will be gathered by a variety of vehicles
and all of that information will be put together to help create high-definition
maps for self-driving cars. All of these cars will tackle the busy streets of
downtown Tokyo, equipped with the latest Toyota Safety Sense features of
course, and send back data that could one day be used by autonomous vehicles.
The big goal of the project is to ensure that these self-driving cars have the
exact information they need, no matter where in the world they're located.
Vehicles without high-quality maps are likely to still require the intervention
of a human driver from time to time. It's going to take some work to accurately
map all of these roads, but our future cars will appreciate the effort.
