On December 23, 1947, Bell
Laboratories demonstrated a new technology that revolutionized electronics: the
transistor. Solid state circuits replaced vacuum tubes and paved the way for
microchips and a host of other innovations that wouldn’t have been possible
otherwise. A similar revolution could be coming to Bell Road Toyota sooner than
you think.
Solid state batteries put the charging chemical in
crystalline form. It’s
more expensive (for now), but it’s also more stable, has a higher capacity, and charges
faster than the batteries currently on the market. The company promises that
the first cars using this new technology are just five years away.
That’s big news, but it’s not limited to the automotive industry. After all,
the burgeoning renewable energy industry often borrows or tweaks technology
that got its start under the hood of a car, and these new batteries could lead
to improved storage systems that help make renewables even more viable. Your new Toyota Prius
could do more to help the environment than you realized!
