subjects each model to a battery of crash tests to see how it will stand up in
an accident. The organization placed a bigger focus on how passengers are
protected this year, raising their standards and making it harder to qualify
for this prestigious award.
Doing well in the crash tests can cause a car to be named a
Top Safety Pick, but it has to do a little more work for that “Plus.” The IIHS
also wants automakers to build vehicles that can help you avoid a crash in the
first place. That's why its testers take a closer look at front crash
prevention systems and headlights. To become a Top
Safety Pick Plus, the headlights of a car have to be deemed “Good.” This is
a change from previous years, when they just had to be “Acceptable.”
